Every consumer proposal that is filed by my office includes a clause that states as soon as the total due under the consumer proposal is paid that the consumer proposal is deemed fully performed.

Consumer proposals can be filed for as few as one lump-sum payment to as many as sixty monthly payments.  Sixty months is the longest term that a consumer proposal can be filed for under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.

Once you’ve determined that you can’t dig yourself out of your personal debt issues on your own you should stop paying your creditors’ that will be included in your consumer proposal or personal bankruptcy filing.

According to the Canadian Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, personal bankruptcies decreased 19.1 % across Canada in 2011.
